So, what do you think happened to the man they found? Did he drown first, and then get eaten, or eaten till he drowned? Or, used to lay eggs into?
In the past, I had thought they were sentient because that's sort of how they are talked about by the characters. But, upon hearing it, I found myself thinking they were like animals from another dimension luring a rare and tasty meal.
The description of them was amazingly creative. You can really see why and how it influenced Lovecraft.
I'm left thinking the final sacrifice was just some unlucky soul, probably fishing on the river bank that "they" found. I like your aliens idea, that would fit.
Do you think the Willows were actually moving?
Were the willows actually moving? I think sorta. The main character described the creatures/aliens looking like the willow bushes--only sort of seething and flowing. I think the creatures were occupying the same space as the willows only in another dimension--so they were sort of superimposed on one another. They hid by blending into the willows--like a chameleon--but dimensionally as well as visually.
I think they were laying eggs because the whorls in the body were small while the whorls created by the one's by the fire were much larger.
